We were honored to welcome MUDr. Tomáš Šebek, a renowned gastroenterologist and seasoned humanitarian, as our guest speaker at the recent gathering of the Rotary Club Prague International. Our club, always intrigued by unique experiences and inspirational stories, found Dr. Šebek's life story deeply moving and enlightening.
Dr. Šebek presented his impressive career journey, spanning nearly two decades as a GI surgeon consultant, specializing in colon cancer, and his instrumental roles in creating innovative health platforms and initiatives such as the eCME medical agency MeDitorial, virtual hospital uLekare.cz, and MED21, a med tech pre-fund.
But it was his first-hand accounts of serving as a frontline trauma surgeon with Medecins sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders) that truly captivated us. He vividly conveyed the realities of his missions to Haiti, Afghanistan, South Sudan, and Yemen, painting a picture of the tragic consequences of war. Amidst these intense experiences, Dr. Šebek found solace and thrill in his passion for flying, as a licensed pilot with PPL and aerobatic fly licenses.
His commitment to leveraging medical and digital skills to push the boundaries and improve people's lives and health globally resonated strongly with our members. The detailed insights into his work on the telemedicine platform uLékaře.cz, which offers virtual medical consultations, were particularly intriguing. The platform's mission aligns closely with our own, advocating for a change in healthcare provision towards a more efficient, higher quality model based on technology.
The Rotary Club Prague International thoroughly enjoyed Dr. Šebek's enlightening speech. His humility, despite the daunting challenges he has faced, left a profound impression on all present. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Šebek for sharing his experiences with us and hope that he enjoyed his visit as much as we did.
Dr. Šebek's life mission, focus, and unique experiences truly embody the Rotary motto, "Service Above Self." We feel privileged to have heard his story and look forward to supporting such inspiring individuals in their mission to make the world a better place.
