James Ulmer, who lives in Prague, is a leading American entertainment journalist and cultural commentator best known for creating the “Ulmer Scale” — a celebrity ranking system that evaluates actors and directors on criteria like bankability, talent, career management, and risk factors. The scale became widely used in Hollywood and in publishing as a way to assess star power in a structured way.
His credits include contributions to Variety, The Los Angeles Times, The Observer (London), and he spent eight years as international editor and columnist for The Hollywood Reporter, supervising a team of correspondents and covering global film festivals and markets.
Ulmer’s insights have been sought in major media, including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times Magazine, CNN’s Showbiz Today, Entertainment Tonight, CBS This Morning, HBO, BBC, FOX, and E!.
